Rosie Saunders

The botanical paintings of Rosie Sanders lie at the extreme edge of botanical art. Her watercolour flower paintings have impact and dynamism and the sensuality of the flower paintings are thought by many to be comparable to the paintings of Georgia O’Keeffe.

You may also buy fine art reproductions of Rosie’s botanical paintings. They are among the highest quality botanical art prints available today. Rosie Sanders also makes original botanical artist’s prints. These are unique monotypes, etchings on steel and copper and very small editions of drypoint.   Rosie Sanders runs botanical painting and botanical printmaking courses and  at her home in Devon.

Rosie Sander’s unique style of painting pushes the boundaries of Botanical Art and whilst fitting loosely into the tradition  of the genre, the size of her compositions and intense richness of colour sets her apart from her contemporaries. The Flower paintings have a sensuous quality and drama that is unrivalled in contemporary botanical painting and her paintings of fruit and vegetables combine this quality with a realism that makes them ‘good enough to eat’.

Several of Rosie’s paintings are in the collection of Dr.Shirley Sherwood and a dramatic painting of Arisaemas has been prominently displayed in the new Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art in Kew Gardens.   She is represented by Jonathan Cooper at Park Walk Gallery in London where she has had solo shows since 2002. Rosie is a member of The Devon Guild of Craftsmen as a printmaker.

Rosie has been awarded five Gold medals by the Royal Horticultural Society and won the Royal Academy miniature award.   She has had several books published , the most important of which is  ‘The English Apple’ published by Phaidon Press in 1980 and re designed, updated and republished as ‘The Apple Book’ by Frances Lincoln in 2010.

In 2015, Bluten, a book of all the large flower paintings was published in Germany.  In 2016 a UK edition, Flowers, was published by Pavillion books. It is a beautifully produced large format book in full colour with text about the flowers by the swiss botanist Dr. Andreas Honegger.   The original German edition  is published by Elizabeth Sandmann Verlag. ISBN 978-3-938045-97-8.  There is also a spanish and french edition.

Rosie currently lives in Devon where she gives residential or non residential botanical painting courses.
